Getting pregnant for HIV positive couples. Is it possible?

Given the contemporary scientific advances and treatment options available for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) seropositive people these days have better quality of life, and that is why it is common for many couples in this situation to consider the possibility of starting a family.
An option available for a couple where the male partner is HIV positive is IVF treatment using appropriately prepared sperm. This technique is called “semen washing” and consists of separating the motile spermatozoa from the rest of the semen as HIV virus is contained in the seminal liquid. IVF treatment follows in order to achieve a pregnancy. This approach considerably decreases the chances of contracting the infection for the woman carrying the pregnancy as well as for the child.
Over the past few years this technique has been carried out successfully by using washed sperm for HIV cases. Although there is a theoretical risk of contracting infection, there has been no case of seroconversion in women or foetuses reported so far.

Pregnancy possibility for HIV positive women.

It is important to take into account that when a pregnant woman is a HIV carrier and does not receive the appropriate treatment, the risk of the infection being transmitted to the child ranges between 15% and 20%.

Over the last few years this risk has been reduced to less than 1% as a result of the introduction of new effective medicine for AIDS and later on the use of combined antiretroviral agents as well as strict pregnancy and birth protocols. However, these drugs are potential teratogens (they can cause malformations in the newborn) and have to be administered under specialized control.

Currently we are unable to provide treatment for HIV positive women at  Intersono IVF clinic.

HIV positive couples fertility treatment at Intersono IVF clinic.

Exist only a few medical centres offering fertility treatment for HIV infected patients who want to have children. Intersono is a unique center in Western Ukraine offering this option which essentially consists of using the previously prepared sperm for IVF.

When in a couple one or both partners are infected with HIV, they should be aware that if they want to have a child they need specialised help and attention in order not to risk their health and that of the newborn. This help involves four aspects:

  • Base illness stability and control by a specialist.
  • Reproductive advice in order to programme the pregnancy under the best possible conditions or to rule it out in some cases.
  • IVF using washed sperm for HIV cases.

The washing procedure is carried our in our facility in Uzhorod whith subsequent storage or transportation in a special medical container for HIV positive biologic meterial is possible to the clinic of your choice.

Treatment Procedure

In order to provide the semen washing the patient(male) is asked to perform blood tests for HIV, RW, Hepatitis B and C and collect the semen sample at Intersono clinic, which will be frozen and stored until the HIV test results come back .

The sample will be subject to a special procedure - semen washing. The result of performed polymerase chain reaction will be available in 10 days.
